The CR220J was developed based on the already successful CR200J platform. Unlike other EMUs currently in service on China’s railway network, the CR220J employs a technical configuration similar to that of Germany’s ICE 1 and ICE 2 trains, as well as France’s TGV: traction power is concentrated within one or two dedicated “power cars” (or power heads) that operate in a consist with unpowered passenger carriages, rather than having the propulsion system distributed across the individual cars of the entire train.
