Alstom Signaling System

This agreement builds upon Alstom’s previous success in delivering Ireland’s first ETCS-equipped train and completing the initial deployment of trackside equipment. It marks a significant milestone in the digital transformation of Ireland’s railway network.

October 14, 2026 — Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has signed a contract with Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail) to deploy European Train Control System (ETCS) onboard equipment across the operator’s existing national railway fleet.

Valued at approximately €95 million, the contract encompasses the design, manufacturing, installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of ETCS Level 1 onboard equipment for up to 176 trains operated by Iarnród Éireann.

The project is a core component of Ireland’s “National Train Protection System (TPS) Rollout Programme,” under which ETCS will progressively become the primary signaling technology for the Irish rail network. As a key enabler of a digital future for railways, ETCS is a train control standard that monitors train movements via onboard equipment and includes the capability to bring a train to a stop when necessary.
