Avelia Horizon is a high-speed passenger train designed and manufactured by Alstom. Its design is broadly similar to the TGV Duplex series, featuring double-deck carriages and a “power-car-at-each-end” configuration. However, this model offers greater energy efficiency and lower operating costs.
Avelia Horizon belongs to the Avelia family of high-speed trains—a product line developed specifically for the global high-speed rail market. In its basic configuration, it utilizes a “push-pull” (distributed power) trainset, with a power car at each end and 7 to 9 articulated, double-deck passenger carriages in between.
The TGV M is designed with a high degree of flexibility. It features a modular interior, allowing operators to adapt the train—based on a single core design—to meet specific passenger experience requirements or evolving market trends. The internal layout of individual carriages, or even the entire train, can be reconfigured rapidly.
It is equipped with an optimized onboard internet system, which is designed to be highly scalable and capable of integrating future technological innovations.
The train is fitted with ETCS, KVB, and TVM signaling systems and has a rated power output of 7.8 megawatts (MW). Additionally, it carries a lithium-ion battery pack, which provides emergency power and traction in the event of a failure in the external power supply system.
The TGV M can reach a top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph). Thanks to an efficient regenerative braking system, its energy consumption is reduced by 20%. Furthermore, the train is constructed almost entirely from recyclable materials; as a result of these eco-friendly materials, the TGV M has a carbon footprint 37% smaller than that of its predecessor.
